Anthers and Pollen

After the anther filaments straighten the anthers open to reveal the unpigmented translucent pollen.   The opening process is described as longitudinal dehiscence, that is to say, it is a splitting process that runs the length of the anther. The pollen adheres to itself and to the epidermal cells. At this stage, the pollen is partially dehydrated and has the form of a round- ended triangle with a central indentation. The anther is shed at the point of connection of the stamen filament. The shed anthers are often discoloured
